Garrison : "All right, men, it's now or never! There's no going back!"The men of Sparta continued to fight from behind their fortress wall as they had for the previous seven years. For the Spartans, it was a tradition: they did not move out of their defensive walls, or strike at the enemy from a distance. For this reason, the term "Spartan" came to mean a person who wished to fight from a distance, i.e., a non-maneuverive fighter. (No one wants to be a "Spartan" in real life, of course, but if your people were outnumbered, you might prefer to fight a frontal battle, which is not ideal.)
The battle in the movie (300 spartans free download) is actually about a small group of Spartan soldiers (300 Spartans) who are ordered to take the town of Thermopylae. If they succeed, the Spartans will be able to hold the pass and stop the Persians on their way to invade Greece. The group of Spartan soldiers sets off to take the town and are being pursued by a small force of Persians. During the march, they meet a few other small groups of Spartan soldiers, but they quickly lose contact with them. As they reach the town, they take on the Persian army single-handedly, holding them off for over a day. Eventually, they retreat into the town.
The Spartan troops are led by a general named Leonidas (played by Gerard Butler in the movie) who is the father of a young man named, Cleonymus (played by Josh Hartnett). Cleonymus becomes a leading soldier in the fight, and in the middle of the battle, he finds himself inside the Persians' siege tower. He manages to get inside, and he and the Persians get into a heated argument. Cleonymus pushes a Persian soldier through a window and is himself killed.
The Spartans withdraw from the town and their next meeting with the Persians comes when they are marching towards Plataea, a town which is believed to be controlled by the Persians. The Spartans march along the side of a mountain, which is surrounded by the Persian army, and there is a pitched battle. The Spartan army is eventually destroyed, but the Spartans sacrifice themselves by holding off the Persians in a battle that is meant to protect the Greek army at Plataea.
